What We Don’t Do

Our partners at The Project 2043 Institute help people prepare for an inclusive, equitable, and healthy multi-racial democracy. Learn about Founder Julye Williams here.

Here are three things we don’t do.

1) With our donors, we don’t:

  • PRESUME TO KNOW YOU BETTER THAN YOU KNOW YOURSELF. We don’t tell you what is right for you, we help you discover what you believe to be right for yourself.

  • UNDERESTIMATE THE TAX BENEFITS OF THESE GIFTS. Tax benefits are real, and we claim our donation receipts, too.

  • SHY AWAY FROM GENERAL OPERATING SUPPORT. Instead of finding ways to avoid these critical unrestricted gifts, we find leaders we trust and let them do what they do best.

  • PUT YOU ON A PEDESTAL. Or maybe we put everyone on a pedestal? We treat everyone with with equal respect; we are all soldiers in the same army.

2) With our social impact partners, we don’t:

  • MICROMANAGE YOUR EFFORTS. Our selection process is rigorous and you know your work better than we do. We trust you.

  • REQUIRE ONEROUS REPORTING. We also encourage you to speak up quickly when things aren’t working, so we can fix them together.

  • THINK SIZE MATTERS. We work with dynamic organizations of all sizes at every stage of their scaling journey.

  • PRESUME CHANGE IS IMMEDIATE, ESPECIALLY AT SCALE. Meaningful change does not happen overnight. We invest in long-term partnerships.

3) With our own work, we don’t:

  • HESITATE TO BREAK WITH TRADITION. We believe many traditional approaches to philanthropy are not as effective as they could be.

  • COMPROMISE OUR INTEGRITY. It has taken us decades to build our reputations, but these can be destroyed with one poor choice.

  • IGNORE THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN IGNORED FOR TOO LONG. One of our core principles to involve stakeholders from the communities we support in decision making whenever possible.

  • WORK WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE UNKIND. We work very hard—often in stressful and time-sensitive situations—and we drive first-in-class results. We treat everyone with kindness and respect. And we expect the same.

These approaches safeguard the reputations of our client and our partners. They also help us sleep well at night. And we need our rest; there is a great deal to be done tomorrow.

“Chandler has led volunteer events for US presidents and designed philanthropic efforts for some of the country’s wealthiest families. But what impresses me most is the goodwill he creates in the process.”
